Savannah

The sign on the door of Cutting Edge said that the salon was closed but that came as no surprise since it was before opening hours. I pushed the door open and when it gave way, I stepped in.

“Wow,” was my first impression of the interior of Cutting Edge. I loved the arched blue shapes around the salon and the classy oak paneling.

“Hi,” a white blond woman said, emerging from the inside. She smiled. “Sorry, we won’t be open for another half hour.”

“I’m not a customer,” I said. “My name is Savannah—”

“Oh yes of course,” she exclaimed and then came to where I stood and offered a pretty manicured hand. “Cassie told me to expect you. Silly me, it must have slipped from my mind. My name is Daisy, I’m the receptionist.”

I took her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

She went around to the reception desk. “Cassie left some paperwork for you to fill out. Here it is and here’s a pen.”

I grabbed the stack of papers and sat down in the waiting area to fill them out. They were standard stuff you filled out when starting a new job. Cassie walked in as I was filling out the forms.

“Hi Savannah,” she said cheerfully and winked. “Glad you made it. I was afraid that brother of mine would distract you.”

I laughed. “He’s at work.”

She exchanged pleasantries with Daisy then she said to her. “I didn’t tell you but Savannah is my sister-in-law. She’s married to Cameron.”

“Oh,” Daisy said. “I met Cameron when he came to see you.” She turned to me. “You’ll love it here. Everyone is so friendly.”

Daisy hadn’t lied. Four other women of varying ages came in to work, each of them introducing themselves and being super helpful. I was assigned to Paula, a dark haired talkative woman. She was the best person to learn from as she explained everything she was doing. We started off by cleaning and tidying her station, then her first client came in for a trim.

Cutting Edge was even more popular than I’d originally thought. Every stylist had appointments back to back. I had thought Cassie was being nice when she said they needed another employee.

At eleven, we got sandwiches and coffee from Joe’s and sat down to eat when work allowed. I stayed until it was time to pick Ethan up from school. Though tired, I felt exhilarated, and I could easily have put in a twelve-hour shift. It hadn’t felt like work at all and I’d enjoyed chatting with the clients.
